Cocktail of the Week: Breakfast Caipirinha

When it comes to beating the breakfast blahs and hosting a fabulous brunch with friends, nothing sets the mood better than a delicious spiked beverage that can be savored before noon. While mimosas are always a perfect choice, it doesn’t hurt to take a break from the bubbly for a drink that’s smooth, clean, and an ideal match for warm waffles. When we first tried the Caipirinha, Brazil’s national cocktail, its incredibly sweet flavor from sugarcane juice joining overflowing slices of lime for a tangy bite left us wanting to create our own carnaval. While the original Caipirinha is best served for weekend fiestas, another recipe takes it down a notch, without losing its festive spirit.

The Breakfast Caipirinha is a prized possession from Brazil with an unmistakable fruity flavor that’s key to a satisfying mid-morning meal. Like freshly squeezed orange juice, the Breakfast Caipirinha is a delightful treat that can be sipped with anything from French toast to frittatas. Cachaca is added to give the drink a slight taste of melting, velvety caramel, while spoonfuls of orange marmalade, a tart jam with chunks of peel, tones down the cocktail’s candied taste. Served at Miami’s Area 31, the same restaurant where we discovered the Papa Doble, the Breakfast Caipirinha is an irresistible, scrumptious wake-me-up that’ll transform any morning into a celebration.
